How to Measure Ring Size at Home
Choosing the right ring size can feel uncertain, especially when you’re buying online. While ring sizing isn’t an exact science, a few simple guidelines can help you find a size that feels comfortable for everyday wear.
How Should a Ring Fit?
A comfortable ring should feel secure, move easily over the knuckle, and sit in place without pressure
A ring that can be worn comfortably every day should:
- slide on easily
- offer slight resistance over the knuckle
- not turn excessively once in place
- be removable without discomfort
How to Measure Correctly
Accurate measuring starts with the right approach. Taking a little extra care at this stage can help you choose a size that feels comfortable from the first wear.
Which Finger to Measure
Decide which finger the ring will be worn on. This might sound straightforward, but each finger is a different size. Even the same finger might be a slightly different size on the right hand than it is on the left hand.
How to Measure Accurately
Method One: Measuring the finger the ring will be worn on
- Avoid measuring when hands are cold.
- Measure at the end of the day when your finger will be slightly bigger than it is in the morning.
- Measure the finger 2–3 times on different days and choose the bigger measurement to guide your size choice.
- We suggest you use a piece of non-stretch string or paper to measure the actual finger you will wear the ring on.
- Remember to take the measurement of the knuckle into consideration.
Method Two: Measure a ring you already wear that is comfortable
- Place a ring that is a good fit on a ruler.
- Measure the inner diameter, making sure you measure the widest points.
- Once you have measured your ring match the diameter to a size on our ring size chart.
Band Width and Fit
The width of a ring affects how it feels on the finger. Wider bands tend to fit more snugly, while finer bands often feel slightly looser.
If the ring is a wider band, you might find it more comfortable to size up slightly.
Climate and Time of Day
Temperature and timing matter more than most people realise. Fingers naturally change size throughout the day and in warmer or cooler conditions.
For example, fingers tend to swell in warmer temperatures and later in the day, which can affect how a ring fits.
What to Do If Your Ring Size Falls Between Sizes
If your measurement falls between two sizes, then it’s best to opt for comfort. In most cases, choosing the slightly larger size allows for natural changes in finger size.
This is particularly true when the ring design features a broader band or if you live in a warm climate.
Remember — comfort always wins over tightness.
Common Ring Sizing Mistakes
Small measuring errors can lead to an uncomfortable fit. Being aware of common mistakes can help you avoid choosing a size that feels too tight or too loose.
Try to avoid:
- measuring with anything soft that could stretch for example, wool
- measuring only where the ring will sit on the finger and not taking the size of the knuckle into consideration
- measuring once and assuming it will be correct
